President Mahmoud Abbas receives the 17th annual report of ICHR

President Mahmoud Abbas receives the 17th annual report of the Independent Commission for Human Rights on the status of human rights in the Palestinian Controlled Territory during 2011.

President Mahmoud Abbas reaffirmed his determination to implement the rule of law in PCT and ensure respect for the freedom and rights of the Palestinian citizens during his reception of the 17th annual report of the Independent Commission for Human Rights on the status of human rights in PoT in 2011 in his office in Ramallah on Sunday.

The report was presented to the president by a delegation of ICHR headed by its General Commissioner Ahmad Harb and other members in the presence of the President's Office Chief of Staff Hussien al-Araj.

The president emphasized the support of PNA for judicial independence and implementation of courts' decisions.

General Commissioner of ICHR told WAFA News Agency following the meeting that the report focuses on the status of human rights in the Palestinian territory and the impact of the Israeli occupation on it.

He added that the report also focuses on the role of PNA in fulfilling its obligations towards maintenance of human rights.

Dr. Harb added that ICHR presented president Abbas with its initiative of formulating a draft law for freedom of opinion and press in the Palestinian territory.

He also pointed out that ICHR stressed the importance of holding phased local and municipal election in the Palestinian territory as a democratic entitlement that must be exercised.

Dr. Harb noted that the report shows decline in the number of complaints related to ill-treatment in the detention centers.

The president showed special attention to the issue and expressed his will to fully end it.
