ICHR Calls for an Immediate Action to Save the Life of Prisoner Khadir Adnan and Condemns Admi

Press Statement

Date: 4th of June 2015 (No.12/2015)

ICHR expresses its grave concern over the life of the prisoner Khadir Adnan who has been on a hunger strike in Israeli jails for 31 consecutive days, protesting his renewed detention without any charge or trial by the Israeli occupation authorities. ICHR also holds the Israeli occupation authorities accountable for his life and asks for his immediate release.

The Israeli occupation authorities have held Adnan under administrative detention for three times, the last time was on the 7th of November 2011. At that point, he started a 66-day long hunger strike and was released on the 7th of April 2012 after his health condition had deteriorated. On the 8th of July 2014, Adnan was rearrested for six months and when the occupation authorities renewed his detention for another six months without any charge or trial in January 2015, he began a new hunger strike for a week. -o

Currently, Adnan has been on hunger strike against the arbitrary administrative detention since the 5th of May, 2015. He confirmed that he would continue his hunger strike until he gets his freedom back.f. 3During his hunger strike, Adnan has been subjected to ill-treatment and medical neglect and he was recently moved from his solitary confinement in Hadarim Prison to Al Ramla Prison's Clinic.

ICHR considers the administrative detention grave violation of human rights principles, the International Humanitarian Law and the Four Geneva Conventions of 1949.At present, there are around 500 Palestinians in detention centers who are been held there without trial or any charge and deprived of meeting their defense advocates. This is a clear violation of international laws and conventions.

Considering the facts mentioned above, ICHR demands that:

The State of Palestine should call upon the international community to put pressure on the occupying power to release the administrative detainees, including Adnan in compliance with the international law and human right conventions.
United Nations agencies to fulfill their obligations and oblige the occupying power to release Adnan in order to save his life.
Local and international media institutions to shed light on the administrative detention and the case of Adnan as well as the deteriorating situation of the Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails.
