Statement of Condolence and Condemnation

The Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) mourns with deep sorrow the loss of its dear colleague, Raafat Salha (Abu Mohammed), Director of the Gaza and North Office, who passed away this morning due to severe injuries sustained during a brutal Israeli airstrike. The attack targeted the Shahin family home in southern Deir Al-Balah, where Raafat and his family had sought refuge. This tragic incident resulted in the deaths of 13 members of his family and in-laws, including his wife, Faten Shaqoura, and his children, Mohammed, Ahmad, Hala, and Saba.

This devastating loss, which has wiped out an entire family from the civil registry, reflects the immense humanitarian tragedy endured by Palestinian civilians under occupation. It underscores the urgent need for immediate action to halt the ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people.

The ICHR shares the pain and grief that Raafat endured before his passing. He suffered severe injuries, including a head wound, the amputation of his right leg while trapped under the rubble, and the loss of several fingers. Despite these immense challenges, Raafat remained hopeful and looked forward to returning to his home in Gaza City.

The ICHR holds the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the loss of Raafat and his family. We call upon the international community, particularly the International Criminal Court, to act immediately by launching investigations into these crimes, holding those responsible accountable, and ensuring the protection of Palestinian civilians against ongoing acts of violence.

We extend our deepest condolences to Raafat’s extended family, colleagues, and all who knew and loved him. Our thoughts are also with the countless Palestinian families who continue to endure immeasurable losses due to ongoing aggression.

May Raafat’s legacy of dedication and resilience inspire us all to continue advocating for justice and human rights.
